Barshai, Rudolf (1924– )

Russian violist and conductor. He founded the Moscow Chamber Orchestra in 1956 and conducted it until he left Russia for Israel in 1976. He was principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra 1983–88 and music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra 1985–88. His transcriptions include Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives, for chamber orchestra, and Shostakovich's string quartet no. 8, for string orchestra.
