Barstow

City in southern central California, 126 km/78 mi northeast of Los Angeles; population (2000) 21,100. It is situated on the intermittent Mojave River, in the Mojave Desert. It is mainly a residential and military community.

Barstow was founded in the 1880s and was a mining town in the 1890s (the Calico Mountains are to the east). It is a division point on rail lines into Los Angeles, and maintenance workshops of the Santa Fe Railroad are here. Marine Corps supply centres are nearby, and the Army's Fort Irwin and the Goldstone Communications Complex are to the northeast. Solar One, a large experimental solar energy plant, is to the east.

Barstow College (1959) is in the city, which is also a gateway to Death Valley and a growing residential centre.
