Bartlesville

City and administrative headquarters of Washington County in northeast Oklahoma, 64 km/40 mi north of Tulsa, on the Caney River; population (2000) 34,700. The site of Oklahoma's first commercially important oil well (1897), it lies in an oil-rich region, and is the home of the Phillips Petroleum Company.

In addition to oil and related industries, natural gas and zinc have been important to the city, which also serves as a distribution centre for livestock and agricultural products. The Price Tower (1955), an oil industry office building designed by the US architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is here.

The city is the seat of Bartlesville Wesleyan College (1910).
