Barton-upon-Humber

Barton-upon-Humber

Ancient market town in North Lincolnshire, England; population (2001) 9,300. It is situated on the south bank of the River Humber, close to the southern end of the Humber Bridge. Barton is a centre for chemical manufacturing, oil refining, and engineering.

Barton-upon-Humber was one of the main ports on the Humber during the Norman Conquest. The tower and west porch of Old St Peter's church are Saxon, with a 14th- and 15th-century building adjoining; St Mary's church dates from the 13th century.
