Barton-upon-Irwell

Village in Greater Manchester, England. It is the site of an aqueduct on the Bridgewater Canal, constructed by James Brindley across the Irwell valley near Manchester. When the Manchester Ship Canal was built in the 1890s, this was replaced by a swing-bridge enclosing a section of the canal. Although still in existence, the Bridgewater Canal is no longer used by commercial traffic.
