Bartow

City and administrative headquarters of Polk County in central Florida, 18 km/11 mi southeast of Lakeland, south of Lake Hancock and near the Peace River; population (1990) 14,700. It is a shipping centre for phosphates and citrus fruits. It also houses fruit canneries, cigar factories, fertilizer plants, and packing houses.

Bartow was settled in 1851 on the site of a Seminole War fort.
