Baruch, Simon (1840–1921)

German-born US physician and pioneer in hydrotherapy. He secured legislation for free public baths in the USA, the first (the Rivington Bath) being opened in New York in 1901.

Baruch was born in Posen, Germany (now Poznán, Poland). He first came to prominence in the medical profession in 1888, when he insisted upon immediate operations for appendicitis.
