Baryatinski, Aleksandr Ivanovich, Prince Baryatinski (1814-1879)

Russian general who furthered the expansion of the Russian Empire into the Caucasus and Central Asia. His most famous campaign was against the warlord Imam Shamil in the Northern Caucasus, whom he captured at Gunib, Dagestan, in 1859. Baryatinski was made commander-in-chief and governor-general of the region in 1856, and was appointed a field-marshal in 1859.
