Basel-Landschaft

Demi-canton of northern Switzerland; area 428 sq km/165 sq mi; population (1999 est) 258,600. Its capital is Liestal. The Birs and Ergolz rivers flow through the region. Dominated by the Jura Mountains, the demi-canton is heavily forested, with a strong agricultural base that counts fruit growing, dairy farming, and cattle breeding as the main economic activities.

Basel-Landschaft was formerly part of the canton of Basel, which joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501. Basel was divided in 1833 into Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft after fighting between the rural areas and the inhabitants of the city of Basel. The constitution of the demi-canton was formulated in 1892. The canton is mainly German-speaking and Protestant.
