Basel-Stadt

    0.01 sec.

Basel-Stadt

Demi-canton of northern Switzerland; area 37 sq km/14 sq mi; population (1999 est) 188,500. Its capital is Basel, Switzerland's second-largest city. The demi-canton is virtually coextensive with the city, but also includes two villages north of the Rhine. The city is an important financial and transportation centre, and chemical, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries are found here.

The canton of Basel joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501. It was divided in 1833 into Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft after civil strife broke out between the peasants of the rural areas and the inhabitants of the city. The demi-canton's constitution dates from 1889. The canton is mainly German-speaking and Protestant.
