Bashkortostan

Autonomous republic of the Russian Federation; area 143,600 sq km/55,444 sq mi; population (1990) 3,964,000 (40% Russian, 30% Tatar, 25% Bashkir). The capital is Ufa. The Ural Mountains are in the east and River Kama in the northwest; other rivers are Belaya, Ufa, Dema, and Zilim. Chief industries are oil, natural gas, minerals (gold and iron ore), chemicals, engineering, timber, and paper. The languages Russian and Bashkir are spoken.

Annexed by Russia in 1557, Bashkortostan became the first Soviet autonomous republic in 1919. It gained federal republic status within the Russian Federation in 1992.

The Bashkirs are a partly Turkic people who converted to Sunni Islam by the 14th century.
