Basil I

Basil I (812–886)

Byzantine emperor 867–86 and founder of the Macedonian dynasty. He gained sole power in 868 by assassinating his benefactor, the emperor Michael III, who had appointed him co-ruler the previous year. His reign saw a continuing offensive against the forces of Islam in both the west and the east of the empire. He also began to revise and codify the body of laws first compiled by Justinian I.

Basil's resistance to Islamic encroachment on the western empire was helped by an alliance with the Roman pope. Arab forces took Sicily, but were checked in Dalmatia.

Because basil is very susceptible to frost damage, it is important to wait until after all danger of frost has passed to put your seeds or plants in the garden.
Basil is fundamentally "anti-Darwinian" and "pro-Creation.
Basil is also cold sensitive and will not survive even a mild Valley winter, so I recommend holding off on planting it until next year.
