In 2001, Basilan Island, a remote island in the southern Philippines, was home to hundreds of members of the violent Abu Sayyaf Group, or ASG, and Jemaah Islamiyah, or JI, two terrorist elements with links to al-Qaeda. After early-morning Mass in Zamboanga City and a quick boat ride across the Basilan Straits, Claretian Father Angel Calvo and I have made our way past the capital of Basilan Island, Isabela, up the mountains, past coconut and rubber plantations, to the town of Lamitan. Last year's "Balikatan 02-1" represented a special counterterrorism-focused exercise on Basilan, at the request of the government of the Philippines. |
