Basilan

Island group and province in the Philippines, comprising the island of Basilan and about 50 others; area 1,372 sq km/530 sq mi; population (1995) 296,000. The capital is Isabela. Basilan Island is the largest of the Sulu Archipelago, separated from Zamboanga City, on Mindanao Island, by the Basilan Strait. The island is mountainous and products include rubber (the main crop), timber, coconuts, rice, coffee, cocoa, pepper, abaca (hemp), and corn; there is also some copper mining. Fishing and cattle raising are major occupations of the inhabitants.

The Yakan, an ethnic Muslim people noted for their weaving, make up one-third of the population of Basilan Island.
