Bass StraitSea channel separating the mainland of Australia from Tasmania. The strait is 322 km/200 mi long, with an average width of 255 km/158 mi. Oil was discovered here in 1965 and first extracted in 1969. The region now has 18 oil and gas fields.

Although race officials did finally receive the faxed storm warning, 22 hours before the sailors reached the treacherous waters and gale force winds in Bass Strait, they failed to grasp the severity of it, and did not inform the race boats. ACOR's principal assets consist of 15,440,116 gross surface acres of overriding royalty interest and 8,561,007 gross acres of working interests, located Onshore Australia in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin and Offshore Australia in the Gippsland Basin in the Bass Strait. |
