Bassani, Giovanni Battista (c. 1647–1716)

Italian violinist and composer of the generation between Monteverdi and Vivaldi. He was organist at Ferrara from 1667 and was later in charge of the cathedral music at Bologna; he returned to Ferrara as maestro di cappella in 1683. He composed 12 oratorios, produced nine operas, and brought out a large amount of church and instrumental music.
