bass clarinet

Single-reed woodwind instrument in B flat. It is twice the length of the ‘ordinary’ B flat clarinet with a range an octave lower. It has a rich and resonant sound. An example of the bass clarinet can be heard in the ‘Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy’ from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite (1891-92).
