Bastrop

City in northeast Louisiana, 32 km/20 mi northeast of Monroe; population (2000) 13,000. Paper and wood products, printing inks, varnish, carbon black, and other chemicals are manufactured. The region produces corn, cotton, soybeans, rice, and peaches; cattle are also raised.

Bastrop was founded in 1845 and experienced its greatest growth when the Monroe natural gas field was discovered in 1916.
