Cherkessk

City in the Stavropol krai (territory) in the southwestern Russian Federation, capital of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic (Karachay-Cherkessia); population (1996 est) 120,000. It is situated on the River Kuban 90 km/56 mi south of Stavropol. Industries include the manufacture of electrical equipment and other goods.

Cherkessk was founded in 1803 as a Cossack village and became a town in 1880.
