Batam

Island in the Riau Archipelago, Indonesia, 19 km/12 mi south of Singapore; area 414 sq km/ 160 sq mi; population (1990) 91,900. Batam has been much developed since 1989, when it became a free-trade zone. Tourism is based on golfing resorts for Asian business travellers.
