Batan Islands

Northernmost province and island group of the Philippines, situated between Luzon Island and Taiwan; area 210 sq km/81 sq mi; population (2000) 16,500. The capital is Basco. The Batan Islands are mainly rugged, and there are coral reefs. The main islands are Itbayat, Batan, and Sabtang. Products include rice, corn, garlic, onions, and yams; there are valuable coal mines.

Cattle farming and fishing are also carried out. Agricultural activities here are dictated by the frequency of typhoons. Many of the houses are built of solid rock with grass-thatched roofs.
