Batangas

Province of the Philippines on Luzon Island; area 3,165 sq km/1,222 sq mi; population (1995) 1,659,000. The capital is Batangas. The province is mountainous and includes Lake Taal which has an active volcano as a central island. With its fertile volcanic soils the province is a source of vegetables, fruit, and other products including sugar, coconut oil, and timber. Lake Taal, with a high altitude and cool climate, is a centre for tourism.

Batangas

Port and capital of Batangas province on Luzon Island in the Philippines, 90 km/56 mi south of Manila; population (2000) 247,600. Batangas was founded in 1561, and has a considerable trade in local produce, including embroidery, with Manila. There is also trade in agricultural produce and chemicals. There is some fishing and an oil refinery.
