Bateman, John Frederic La Trobe (1810–1889)

English civil engineer who was famous as a designer and builder of reservoirs and waterworks. He devised and built reservoirs to supply water to the rapidly growing cities of Manchester (from Lake Thirlmere) and Glasgow (from Loch Katrine).

Bateman superintended the construction of waterworks for many other large towns, and was also responsible for the water schemes of Buenos Aires, Naples, and Constantinople.
