Batesville

City and administrative headquarters of Independence County in northeastern Arkansas, 129 km/80 mi northeast of Little Rock, on the White River; population (1990) 9,200. It is a processing centre for fruit, cotton, corn, hay, livestock, poultry, and dairy items. Among its industries are cotton ginning and grist and saw milling. It has bottling works and manufactures wood products and shoes. Limestone, manganese, and black marble are mined nearby.

Arkansas College (1872) is here.

Batesville

City and joint administrative headquarters (with Sardis) of Panola County in northwestern Mississippi, 58 km/36 mi northeast of Clarksdale; population (1990) 6,400. It trades in and processes local cotton, corn, and timber.

Founded in 1855, it acquired the population of nearby Panola when the railway came here.
