Berkeley Springs

Town and administrative headquarters of Morgan County in West Virginia, 29 km/18 mi northwest of Martinsburg, on Warm Springs Run, near the Potomac River; population (1990) 700. It has been a health resort since before the Europeans arrived. It is the site of Berkeley Springs State Park, and has sandpits and canning and bottling plants.

During the American Revolution (1775–83), Virginia soldiers bathed their wounds in its warm mineral waters. George Washington, first president of the USA, and his family came here, and in the 19th century the spa, with a large hotel, was an important social centre.
