uninterruptible power supply

(UPS) power supply that includes a battery, so that in the event of a power failure it is possible to continue operations. UPSs are normally used to provide time either for a system to be shut down in the usual way (so that files are not corrupted) or for an alternative power supply to be connected. For large systems these operations are usually carried out automatically.
