Battipaglia

Industrial and market town in Campania region, southwest Italy, 20 km/12 mi southeast of Salerno; population (1991) 47,100. It is situated on the productive, irrigated Sele plain, where citrus fruits, olives, corn, grapes, tobacco, and garden vegetables are cultivated. Battipaglia is an important road and rail route centre; as such it was a key target for Allied landings around Salerno in 1943.
