Battishill, Jonathan (1738–1801)

English harpsichordist, organist, and composer. He was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral. In about 1762 he became harpsichordist to Covent Garden Theatre, where he produced in 1764 the opera Almena, written jointly with Michael Arne. About the same time he became organist of three city churches, and began to write church music. His best-known pieces are the anthems Call to Remembrance and O Lord, look down from heaven. Other works include music for the stage, glees, catches, and songs.
