Battle Ground

Town in west-central Indiana, 11 km/7 mi northeast of Lafayette; population (1990) 800. The Battle of Tippecanoe was fought here on 7 November 1811, in which Shawnee forces were repelled by American troops under William Henry Harrison. The battle site is now a state memorial park.

Battle of Tippecanoe

Shawnee forces camped 5 km/3 mi to the northeast, near the junction of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers, in Prophetstown (named after their leader Tenskwatawa, ‘the Shawnee Prophet’). They attacked the American troops and were driven back, after which Prophetstown was destroyed. Harrison's reputation as the ‘Hero of Tippecanoe’ was a major factor in his successful 1840 quest for the presidency.
