Bauer, Marion (1887–1955)

US composer and teacher. She studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and taught at New York University 1926–51. Her works are often in smaller forms and are neoclassical in spirit. Her books include 20th-Century Music (1933) and How Opera Grew (1955).

piano pieces New Hampshire Woods (1921), Sun Splendour (1926, also for orchestra), and Dance Sonata (1932); piano concerto ‘American Youth’ (1943).

Chamber

string quartet (1928); viola sonata (1936); oboe sonata (1940).

Vocal

China for chorus and orchestra (1945).
