Bay City

City, port, and administrative headquarters of Bay County, east Michigan; population (2000) 36,800. It is situated near the mouth of the Saginaw River, 21 km/13 mi north of Saginaw and 6 km/4 mi southwest of Lake Huron. Bay City is a major deep-water port for the Great Lakes and oceangoing ships, and is the centre of an agricultural region; its industries include shipbuilding and the manufacture of iron, magnesium castings, petrochemicals, auto and aircraft equipment, and processed foods.

Bay City was first settled in the 1830s, and incorporated as a city in 1865. Michigan's lumber boom (1850–90) made the city ‘Lumber Queen of the World’ until the forests were depleted.
