Bay County

County in eastern Michigan, bordered to the east and northeast by Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron and drained by the Saginaw and Kawkawlin rivers; area 1,158 sq km/447 sq mi; population (1990) 111,700. Its administrative headquarters and largest city is Bay City.

It became prosperous during the Michigan lumber boom (1850–90), then developed soft-coal mining, commercial fishing, and beet-sugar refining. Agricultural products include beans, chicory, sugar beets, and dairy products. There is manufacturing in Bay City and Essexville. Fishing and hunting resorts are found around the county.
