Bay St Louis

City and administrative headquarters of Hancock County in southern Mississippi, 77 km/48 mi northeast of New Orleans, at the mouth of St Louis Bay and overlooking the Mississippi Sound; population (1990) 8,100. It is a resort, with some lumber and bottling industries.

Part of the 1789 Spanish land grant, Bay St Louis had by 1812 become a coastal retreat for Natchez planters. The New Orleans, Mobile, and Chattanooga Railroad (1869) brought substantial resort trade, which remains the city's economic base today.
