Bayamón

Town in Puerto Rico, in the West Indies, now a suburb of San Juan; population (2000 est) 203,500. Bayamón is linked to San Juan by a freeway and is on the main highway to Arecibo. It manufactures leather goods, clothing, furniture, rayon, metal products, plastics, chemicals, firearms, and alcohol. There is also some food processing and sugar refining.

The city is an important centre of higher education; institutions include a college of the University of Puerto Rico, Bayamón Central University, and Caribbean University College. Historic features include the ruins of Caparra, a settlement founded nearby in 1508 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, and Santa Cruz Cathedral, established in 1772.

The public official José Celso Barbosa was born here.
