Bayou La Batre

Bayou La Batre

City in southwestern Alabama, 32 km/20 mi southwest of Mobile, just north of the Gulf of Mexico; population (1990) 2,500. First settled in 1796, it was a steamer port between Mobile and New Orleans, and is now both a resort and a commercial fishing, canning, boatyard, and oil industry service centre.

Benjamin chairs the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States and founded the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in the southern state of Alabama, which has been repeatedly battered by hurricanes, most notably in 2005 by Katrina.
