Beacon Hill

Historic residential neighbourhood of downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Situated on the Shawmut Peninsula, Beacon Hill is one of the oldest and most exclusive parts of the city. The 18th- and 19th-century red-brick town houses here have been extensively restored, with cobblestone streets and gaslights contributing to the old-world atmosphere. It is a major tourist attraction.

The district is named after a beacon that was erected in 1634 to warn of enemy attack. The gold-domed Massachusetts State House (1798) is in the southeast, facing Boston Common, and Louisburg Square is in the west. Beacon Hill was once much higher than it is now; during the 19th century, much of the hill was excavated and used as landfill for Back Bay and other low-lying areas of the city.

Because of the tourist trade, there are many antique shops in the area. The Bull and Finch bar in Beacon Hill was the inspiration for the long-running television comedy Cheers.
