Beaminster

Ancient market town in west Dorset, England; population (2001) 3,900. It is situated in an area of great natural beauty 10 km/6 mi north of Bridport, on the River Brit. The church is notable for its early 16th-century tower. The nearby almshouses date from 1603. Parnham House, Mapperton, and Melplash Court are all fine Tudor houses in the vicinity.

Beaminster is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The town was devastated three times by fire - in 1644 (during the Civil War), in 1684, and in 1781. Thomas Hine (1775-1822), who gave his name to the Cognac Hine, was born in Beaminster.
