Bere Island

Island in Bantry Bay, County Cork, Republic of Ireland, located 2 miles from the mainland town of Castletownbere; population (2002) 200. The main settlement is Rerrin Village. Between Bere Island and the mainland is a sheltered harbour, Bere Haven, formerly a fortified anchorage for the British Atlantic fleet.

On the island are the remains of the late Victorian military fortifications that Britain built to protect its naval base at Berehaven, which they held until 1938. These include two six-inch guns. There are also two Martello towers. Other historical sights include a wedge tomb and a standing stone. The Ardnakinna Lighthouse was constructed in 1850.
