Beard, (Daniel Carter) ‘Uncle Dan’ (1850–1941)

US illustrator and youth leader. Beard established two organizations for boys – the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905 and the Boy Pioneers of America in 1909 – that were precursors of the Boy Scouts. At the foundation of the Boy Scouts in 1910, he became National Scout Commissioner. he was known as ‘Uncle Dan’ by a generation of American boys.

Beard wrote 16 books on handicrafts and illustrated Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. He designed the Scout hat, neckerchief, and shirt, and wrote and illustrated many articles in the Scout's magazine Boy's Life.
