Beard, John (1717–1791)

English tenor singer who distinguished himself in both opera and oratorio. Handel composed especially for him the tenor parts in several of his oratorios, including Samson, Judas Maccabaeus and Jephtha. Loss of hearing ended Beard's career in 1767.
