Beaufort Sea

Section of the Arctic Ocean off Alaska and Canada, named after the British admiral Francis Beaufort. Oil drilling is allowed only in the winter months because the sea is the breeding and migration route of bowhead whales, the staple diet of the local Inuit people.

The Beaufort Sea lies in the wedge formed between Point Barrow, Alaska, the Mackenzie Delta, and northwest Banks Island, Canada. It is over 3,000 m/9,900 ft deep in places. Safe navigation is possible from late July to mid-September.
