Beaufort West

Town in Western Cape province, South Africa, 547 km/340 mi northeast of Cape Town on the railway line to Kimberley and Johannesburg; population (district, 1991) 31,700. It lies at an altitude of 851 m/2,792 ft on the southern slopes of the Nieuwveld Mountains, and is the largest town in this part of the Great Karoo. Sheep farming is important in the area. The town has avenues of pear trees, and is an important tourist stop-over point for visiting the nearby Karoo National Park.
