Beauharnois

City in southern Québec, Canada, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Montréal, on the southern shore of Lac St-Louis (the St Lawrence River); population (1991) 6,400. A huge hydroelectric station at rapids on the St Lawrence River, west of the city, supplies power for much of the province as well as for nearby aluminium, metal alloy, chemical, furniture, printing, steel, and paper industries.

Beauharnois is situated at the mouth of the River St-Louis and on the eastern outlet of the Beauharnois Canal (1932), which bypasses the rapids on the St Lawrence.
