Beaumont-Hamel

French village in the département of Somme, 10 km/6 mi north of Albert.

Under German occupation during World War I, it resisted capture by the British during the Battle of the Somme July 1916. Later in the year, in the Battle of the Ancre, it was severely bombarded by British artillery and eventually captured. It was again the scene of fierce fighting during the German Spring Offensive 1918.
