Beaverton

City in northwestern Oregon, a residential and industrial suburb 13 km/8 mi west of Portland; population (1990) 53,300. In addition to being a trade and distribution centre for the agricultural products of the Tualatin Valley, there are many research facilities and industries manufacturing high-tech items. Athletic shoes and other consumer goods are also produced.

Beaverton was founded in 1868 and was a shipping point on the Oregon Central Railroad. The city, now often called Silicon Forest, has grown rapidly. There are many vineyards and wineries in the immediate area.
