Beazley, John Davidson (1885-1970)

British classical archaeologist. He transformed the study of ancient Greek vase-paintings, showing that by analysing the style of the paintings it was possible to isolate the work of individual painters and trace their artistic development. He donated his vases and other antiquities to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, together with his notes and photographs.

He was made a CH in 1959.
