Bechet, Sidney Joseph (1897-1959)

US jazz musician. He played clarinet and was the first to forge an individual style on soprano saxophone. He developed a jazz-swing improvisational style during the mid-1920s that established his reputation, and was known for his use of a pronounced vibrato. Bechet was based in Paris from 1951, where he was greatly esteemed.
