Beck, Józef

    0.01 sec.

Beck, Józef (1894–1944)

Polish soldier and politician, foreign minister of Poland 1932–39. He served in Józef Piłsudski's Polish Legion against the Russians in 1914, and took part in the Polish attack that drove the Soviet Union from Polish territory in 1919–20. As foreign minister in Pilsudski's military government, he tried to preserve Polish independence by signing non-aggression pacts with both Germany and the USSR. After the fall of Poland to Nazi forces, Beck fled to Romania, where he died.
