Beck (1970– )

US alternative rock artist. His music draws from almost every form of modern music, particularly folk and funk, and is diverse and intentionally chaotic, with sardonic, free-flowing lyrics. He is known for his unconventional mixing of sound and style. His breakthrough single ‘Loser’ (1993), considered an alternative anthem for the ‘slacker’ generation, was followed by his debut album, Mellow Gold (1994).

Other albums include the widely acclaimed Grammy Award-winning Odelay (1996), featuring the hit single ‘Where It's At’, Mutations (1998), Midnite Vultures (1999), Sea Change (2002), and Guero (2005).

He was born in Los Angeles, California. He left school during tenth grade and worked as a busker singing blues and folk music on the streets. After spending a year in New York in 1989, he re-established himself in Los Angeles and later signed on with major record producer David Geffen.
