Becker, John (1886–1961)

US composer. After studying at the Cincinnati Conservatory, he taught at Notre Dame 1917–27. From 1930 he was associated with Carl Ruggles, Wallingford Riegger, Henry Cowell, and other avant-garde US composers. His series of Soundscapes create novel effects of instrumentation, while his theatre pieces anticipate later mixed-media works.

Becker, John Chubb and the late Milton Friedman advocate a market-driven, business model of reform for public education, yet none offers any compelling, scientifically conducted evidence to support these experimental notions.
One approach, typified by the work of Craig Becker, John Rule and Deborah Valenze, follows from the observation that the advance of eighteenth-century capitalism transformed the meaning of property, challenging customs and common rights that had long been central to the fabric of social and economic life.
